THC

The “THC” stands for Torch Height Control: a module (hardware+ software) that automatically adjusts the Z-axis of a plasma cutting torch based on feedback from the plasma arc .

THC ( Torch Height Controller )

Torch Height Controller

It's used in CNC Plasma machines that cut metal sheets  where the workpiece surface may not be perfectly flat or might warp/tilt during cut, so the torch’s distance to the material must be dynamically adjusted.

key Features

Arc-voltage feedback: The module monitors the voltage of the plasma arc. As the torch drifts further from or closer to the workpiece, the arc length changes, which changes the voltage. The THC uses this feedback to adjust Z accordingly.

Integration with Radonix controller/interface: The module is part of the Radonix controller stack (for example their “XYZ Plasma / 3-axis with Torch Height Control” product)

Software parameters/settings: The system includes configurable parameters such as sensitivity (“gain”), initial touch height, contact/arc sensing, delay after piercing, etc. For example: in one description: TorchValue, THCGain, AlwaysTouch, CutDistance, TouchVelocity

Detailed Information

  • Improved cut quality: By keeping the torch at an optimal height relative to the material, the cut kerf, dross formation, and edge quality are improved. The Radonix documentation emphasises consistent, precise cutting performance.

  • Increased consumable life: If the torch sits too far or too close, consumables (nozzle, electrode) wear faster or get damaged. THC helps avoid that.

  • Automatic compensation for warping or uneven materials: Especially in heavy sheet metal or large plates, or surfaces that heat up and distort, THC allows the system to adapt in real time.

  • Reduced operator dependency / less manual intervention: Instead of frequent manual re-adjustments of torch height, the system automates it, freeing up resources and reducing human error.

  • Better process stability and reliability: Especially in production environments, consistent arc length means fewer rejects and less variation.
